New Sight Lines; more light

Yesterday, the engineer’s paperwork with the city was approved and the demolition for the opening in the wall began immediately. Everything changes from this point: new sight lines and more light everywhere! The opening will be slightly smaller than this image once the cerchiatura, or 4-sided ring of steel I-beams (lungarini) are inserted and stabilized in the floor.

Many of the bricks were excavated without breaking. The workers assumed to throw these in the dump, but I will save them for a future project, maybe in the garden. These vintage bricks cost more than new ones.

This is where I might actually leave some exposed brick. The wall on the left is nice and clean, as far as bricks are concerned. This is where the new suspended sink will be mounted with tile around the sink area to protect the wall surface. Above this area will be a small enclosed storage space.
